A history of surviving genocide is no excuse for oppressing other people or training one’s children to hate, fear, and prepare to kill the “enemy” however defined. My Ojibwe ancestors lived and passed on this belief as skilled conflict negotiators and diplomats. They knew the importance of creating alliances and incorporating powerful outsiders into their community, of finding common ground when the only other options were fighting losing battles for the rest of their existence as a people. I cannot remain silent while the messages of hatred and violence kill indiscriminately — children, and women, and families as they sleep — and threaten the survival of all I love.
Thank you, Nadia, for raising awareness about the atrocities affecting Palestinian people.
