Is it terrorism, fundamentalism, racism, tribalism, or is it simply a way of living. A natural consequence of education, upbringing?
The rage that took form in people’s reactions to the assassination of the Jordanian writer Nahed Hatter, as revenge from some “bearded” assigned through God man for a caricature that the deceased had previously posted a few months back. The assassination took place at the entrance of the Supreme Court where the dead was heading to, to hear a final rule against him in that case.
As if those fundamentalists are specialized with labels related with cartoons. You draw a caricature, you get offensive, and you deserve to be killed.
Of course, it felt sad. What happened brought memories of similar such crimes. Farraj Fuda was shot to his death as he was going out of a seminar a decade or two ago. Salman Rushdie is still a targeted man who can be killed by “god’s assigned defenders.” The complete suppression in freedoms especially when it comes to those of speech and thought are a given fact. It is not a coincidence why we don’t find intellectuals who can produce thought. Because it is true that if you think and argue you can get killed.
And awe if you touch GOD …this god they worship is such a vulnerable, weak god. How can GOD be so dependent on these people to defend him?
Such crimes usually make us stand face to face to what we actually foster in our everyday life. In our education. In our media. It triggers fear and in many ways tends to create a self-censorship.
However, this is not the worse thing that our societies are facing … this is a clear act of terror. We can point at it. Define it. They actually found the criminal.
The real tragedy lies in the unmentioned daily crimes that also take place this way. A few days ago a woman was shot to death as she was going out from a wedding party in front of her daughter. The killer is unidentified… and is likely not to be identified.
The crimes as such, take place so often, we barely know anything about.
I cannot see any difference between the two crimes.
The two crimes are a result of a nurturing system of violence, fundamentalism, and radicalism. Our life is fostered with these “virtues” from the moment we see the light of life. We are raised, and we raise our children to be tribal and radical. We feed radicalism in our milk. Everything that we grow living and seeing only takes us to routes of such.
Radicalism is not just a sudden attitude and reaction of oppression by governments or whoever. It is a result of a lifestyle that teaches children how to be careful with the other. How they are right, and the others are always wrong. That there is a conspiracy against them. That once upon millennia we were the best of nations. We foster collective thinking from the moment we tell our children that being a Muslim means that you are not like the Christian and vice versa. When we separate from people and put them in ranks and statuses. When we preach what we do not practice.
I cannot see a difference in the two murders. Except that the death of the writer created a sense of fear, whereas, women die in the same way daily, and it seems to be just a norm….
His society needs to be deconstructed.
There is something that we lose each passing moment within our own humanity. As if we are experiencing a failure of mankind….
